Introduction to Alpacas

This enjoyable course is aimed at those with little or no knowledge of alpacas. It discusses the character of alpacas, their needs, what is involved in keeping alpacas, what you will need to get started and last but not least, some hands-on alpaca introduction.

As there is some hands-on alpaca handling involved, the dress code is definitely casual, with strong footwear or wellingtons if it is wet.

Husbandry

This course is primarily aimed at those people who are very tempted to start breeding alpacas, but who wish to have some hands on training to be completely convinced before they actually take the plunge. This course covers all aspects of alpaca husbandry, handling and nutrition. You will learn how to herd, catch and hold the alpacas without either you or them becoming stressed. You will also learn how to carry out routine husbandry tasks, including toe-nail trimming, oral drenching, injections (sub-cutaneous and intra-muscular) and body scoring. There will be a lot packed into this day, but it is intended to be enjoyable for all - including the alpacas!

As a lot of the time is spent handling the alpacas, casual clothing is essential together with strong footwear or wellingtons if it is wet.

Course Notes:

As these courses are generally run on consecutive days, there will be a 10% discount for anyone wishing to take both courses. If you were to subsequently purchase alpacas from us after attending one of these courses, the cost of these courses, would be refunded.
